Professor Brian Edwards
Brian is influenced by the architectural draftsmanship of John Piper and David Gentleman and the colour palettes of Van Gough. His paintings start in his imagination and he then makes location sketches augmented by iPad images, finally working in acrylics on location and his studio. Acrylics work best on location and afford the use of vibrant colours. Brian’s paintings are freely composed and a mixture of what is in his head and what he can actually see.
Brian’s studio is in Sheringham overlooking the sea near the boating pond. It has picture windows facing the North Sea and is ideal in terms of light and atmosphere.
He is currently working on a series of paintings of the steam locomotives on the North Norfolk Railway. The trains are painted at their stations (Sheringham, Weybourne, Holt) giving him a subject which combines architecture and engineering. As a trained architect, buildings, boats, industry, built heritage etc are always present in his work.
Brian studied architecture in an art school environment. Architecture students were expected to paint, draw well and make sculpture. Now retired he continues these interests. Over the years he has exhibited at the RA, Scottish Royal Academy, at the Saltire Gallery, Edinburgh Festival and elsewhere. Now Emeritus Professor of Architecture at ECA, Edinburgh University he continues to explore the interface between art and architecture.
